My work represents my passion for the graphic and fine arts and the impact of my recent training and education in the history of classical fine arts. I am exploring my past artworks that are raw, immediate, and graphic. These ideas are now juxtaposed with my present works that are calculated and composed.
My early work was inspired by my exposure to contemporary portraiture, German Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism, and the Harlem Renaissance. My early paintings are dense and layered paintings with many expressive colors, textural backgrounds, and gestural marks. Recently, my paintings, illustrations, and printmaking works document contemporary American culture. I have chosen to explore themes and images of people of color due to a lack of proper representation in the canon of Western art history.
